As a co-founder of Charcoalblue, Gavin is responsible for the leadership of the practice and maintains Design responsibility within the studio. In addition, Gavin also oversees New Work and marketing.

I’m a co-founder of Charcoalblue, for over 20 years I have been lucky enough to collaborate with our wonderful clients and amazing team. I lead Design across our international studios, supporting projects, design innovation and ensuring design excellence across all our design disciplines. I also lead our Marketing and Business Development teams, building relationships, helping projects get off the ground and promoting Charcoalblue as we expand into new sectors. And as a Senior Partner I help lead the strategic direction of Charcoalblue. As a trained architect, much of my work centres on cultural projects and involves venue design, visitor and user experience, seating and sightlines. I am often involved in competitions and the early design stages of our projects around the world.

What Excites You Most About Your Work

I am genuinely excited by supporting and mentoring our designers, seeing them grow and mature and develop their own ideas. I like nothing more than being challenged and exploring new approaches presented by our team, I believe we are always learning and good design requires listening, understanding, being provocative, risk taking and reflection. We mustn’t be afraid to change our ideas and we mustn’t be afraid to learn from others – at Charcoalblue we foster this inclusive and supportive culture.

What We Won’t Learn from Your CV

The ability levels are low for all activities!I’m a trail runner, pilot-gig rower, dinghy sailor and reformer Pilates advocate. I live on an ex-zoo and grow my own flowers and vegetables. To decompress, I like nothing more than cooking a meal the I’ve never cooked before – not everything is a success!
