The Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC NYC) opened in September 2023 as the cultural centerpiece of the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan.

Envisioned as a global hub for artistic creation and exchange, the venue presents bold new work across theatre, music, dance, opera, and film. The center supports both live and broadcast performance while enabling international artistic collaborations.

Charcoalblue worked closely with PAC NYC, architect REX, and the wider design team to deliver a venue defined by extreme flexibility and technical innovation.

The building contains three primary theatres that can operate independently or combine to create more than a dozen configurations, allowing the venue to accommodate performances ranging from intimate productions to immersive concerts for up to 1,200 people.

The Vision

PAC NYC was conceived as a 21st-century cultural platform where artists could experiment with new forms of performance and audience experience.

The design team aimed to create a venue that could:

  • support multiple art forms within a single building
  • transform rapidly between performance formats
  • encourage creative experimentation
  • host both live audiences and broadcast productions
  • serve as a cultural gathering space within the rebuilt World Trade Center campus

Flexibility and adaptability were therefore central to every design decision.

Key Challenges

Designing Highly Flexible Performance Spaces

The venue needed to support a wide range of performance styles, including theatre, music, dance, opera, and film.

Each production might require different stage arrangements, seating configurations, acoustic conditions, and technical setups.

Managing Technical Complexity

The theatre systems needed to allow rapid transformation while maintaining high performance standards for acoustics, sightlines, and audience comfort.

This required careful coordination between architecture, theatre design, and engineering systems.

Helping Users Understand the Building’s Potential

With dozens of possible layouts and technical configurations, the client team needed tools to explore and plan how the building could be used before productions moved into the space.

Charcoalblue worked with PAC NYC and the design team to deliver both world-class theatre design and innovative digital tools that help the venue operate at its full potential.

Transformable Theatre Spaces

PAC NYC houses three primary performance spaces with capacities of:

  • 499 seats
  • 250 seats
  • 99 seats

These theatres can function independently or combine with adjacent spaces to create more than twelve unique configurations.

Motorised lifts, movable acoustic walls, and reconfigurable seating towers allow the spaces to transform quickly between formats.

This flexibility enables the building to support everything from intimate experimental work to large-scale immersive performances for up to 1,200 audience members.

The tool allows staff and collaborators to digitally explore theatre configurations before productions load into the building.

The application includes:

  • over 50 configurable layouts
  • switchable stage sizes and seating formats
  • adjustable catwalks and technical elements
  • acoustic banners and production equipment options

Accessible through VR and web-based platforms, the system allows teams to prototype ideas, test sightlines, and evaluate layouts quickly.

Outcome

Since opening in 2023, PAC NYC has become one of the most technologically advanced and flexible performing arts venues in the world.

The project demonstrates how theatre design, architecture, and digital innovation can work together to expand what is possible in live performance — enabling artists to imagine and realise entirely new kinds of work.

Charcoalblue continues to collaborate with PAC NYC, developing new features for the digital platform and supporting production teams as they explore the building’s full creative potential.
