Russell has been working in the performing arts industry for 30 years, successfully leading, designing, planing, and delivering a wide variety of projects in a diverse range of settings. His experience has been cultivated in both technical roles in a wide range of venues, and running a company providing AV and lighting systems and artist sound engineering services in venues across Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.
Prior to joining Charcoalblue, Russell managed the Technical Infrastructure and Production services for the Academy of Performing Arts at Monash University and its three performance venues, instigating several Audiovisual upgrade projects and harnessing his passion in enhancing creative and educational outcomes. In addition, he spent three years as a part of the design team redeveloping the Alexander Theatre and establishing the Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts with the creation of the next generation of performance spaces – the Sound Gallery and the Jazz Club – and the first performance theatres in Australia to use a Meyer Sound Constellation active acoustic system.
Spending the majority of his performing arts career working within an educational institution has provided Russell with a unique understanding of the challenges faced aligning both student learning with performance outcomes.
