Ellen is an acoustic consultant specializing in architectural acoustics and acoustical modelling. She has assisted on a number of national and international projects, spanning from performance venues to higher education facilities. Prior to working at Charcoalblue as a consultant, she was an acoustics intern in 2021 and 2022. Ellen is also a freelance oboist and recording engineer in New York City. The transformation of a venue from design inception to first performance is what drives her passion for acoustics.

What first sparked your love of theatre or performing arts?

Music has been a part of my life for a long time - I first started playing the piano when I was 6 and the oboe at 12 years old. I hadn't really known much about the theatre until I got to high school, where I played in the pit for musicals that we put on every spring. There was something that I found, both then and now, very rewarding about collaborating with vocalists and actors. As a musician, I always find it informative and eye-opening to work with people in different art forms - seeing how others express emotions and interact with each other in the performing arts and theatre has influenced my playing in many positive ways. It is a unique perspective to be able to work on performance venues where these interactions and collaborations thrive, and I feel extremely privileged to do so!
