What's the greatest lesson you've learnt as a Theatre Consultant?

Everything I've learned prior to this point is informing my work as a theatre consultant - be it stage managing, working in a bar, or playing a musical instrument - it's all relevant, it's just about applying the knowledge in a different way.

What first sparked your love of theatre or performing arts?

I grew up in a musical family so was always involved in some ways. Having played professionally for a while I slowly got more and more interested in the mechanics of theatre. Highlight: followspotting James Brown (and many others) at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh for Live8 in 2005 was pretty memorable.

What qualities should a 'great performance space' have?

A great performance space should be transparent to the work and allow practitioners to push boundaries with their art. It shouldn't restrict; it should add value.

We hear when you’re not designing theatres you’re a Scout Leader, how did you get into that?

I was a scout as a child, and as an adult I wanted to give back, to allow other young people to have something of the amazing experiences I’d had. I’d gotten involved a little whilst at university in Glasgow – but didn’t really have the time to make much impact.

After I (eventually) settled in North London I got in touch with my local group and got involved from there. I’d encourage anyone who has considered it to give it a go. We have a whale of a time doing all sorts of fab activities – we were walking in the peaks last weekend and we’ll be in Switzerland this summer!
