Alex Dietz-Kest
Senior Consultant
Alex assists and consults in all aspects of video and audio design.
I work as an audiovisual consultant, focusing on performance spaces where technology needs to support both artistic intent and day-to-day operations. My work involves developing systems that are flexible, intuitive, and resilient—whether for a theater, studio, or multi-use venue. I approach each project by thinking carefully about how the space will actually be used, from touring productions to in-house teams, and how systems can adapt over time. I’m particularly interested in finding solutions that balance technical ambition with practical constraints, creating systems that are both robust and straightforward to use for a wide range of users. I’m most interested in solutions that feel simple and intuitive on the surface, while still delivering the performance and flexibility needed behind the scenes.
What You Hope People Feel in a Space You’ve Worked On
I hope people feel confident and at ease in the space, without having to think about the technology at all. AV systems can often be a source of stress—whether it’s uncertainty about what will work, concerns about feedback, or the complexity of setup. I aim to design systems that remove that friction, so users can focus on their content, their audience, and the experience they’re trying to create, knowing the technology will simply support them.
A Book, Podcast, Building, or Creative Work That Inspires You
A creative work that has stayed with me is the video game Outer Wilds. It’s a game built around exploration and discovery, where progress comes from curiosity rather than instruction. I find it inspiring because of how carefully it reveals information over time, and how everything is interconnected in ways that only become clear through experience. It’s a reminder of the value of designing something that invites people to explore and understand at their own pace, rather than overwhelming them upfront.
Cultural Value You Most Identify With
The value I most identify with is Communication. A big part of my role is helping different audiences understand what an AV system needs to do and why certain decisions have been made. That can mean translating technical requirements for clients and architects, or thinking through how systems will be understood by operators and technicians in practice. I try to be clear and transparent about trade-offs—whether around performance, usability, or budget—so expectations are aligned from the start. For me, good communication is about creating shared understanding and confidence, so that once a system is in place, it feels logical, predictable, and easy to work with.
