Singtel Waterfront Theatre

Completed in September 2022, the Singtel Waterfront Theatre is a new venue for The Esplanade Co. Ltd. The site for the theatre is a prime location on Marina Bay, adjacent to the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay in Singapore.

Charcoalblue were engaged by The Esplanade Co. Ltd to create the initial concept for the new waterfront theatre and led a multi-disciplinary team to set out the vision and establish the project brief. This brief was developed into a full design for a theatre with a number of flexible configurations including capacity for 600 in a seated-end stage, as well as offering flat floor, in-the-round and traverse formats. All formats are supported by comprehensive technical facilities including an extensive control suite, counterweight flying with room for more automated methods in the future as well as a substantial stagelighting and audiovisual infrastructure. The space, and the seating and decking components provided, allows The Esplanade Co. Ltd to develop new formats and ways to use the space in the future, diversifying their programme.

The theatre will present a greater range of work both from international artists and those from Singapore, it is designed to accommodate music, dance and theatre productions, as well as it being suitable for Asian traditional arts. The new venue is a critical platform to enhance Esplanade’s producing role with Singapore and for artists to create new works with touring potential.
