A New Centre for Young Talent Development in the Heart of Camden

This is an indoor gymnasium with a high ceiling and wooden walls. There are gymnastics mats and equipment scattered around the room. A young person stands on a textured spherical object, holding a flower and being observed by an instructor. In the background, two individuals are conversing next to a laptop on a tripod.

Under the visionary leadership of client Roundhouse, and architects Paddy Dillon and Reed/Watts, we were honored to provide building-wide acoustics design for Roundhouse Works: a new center for developing and emerging young talent in the heart of Camden. Including state-of-the-art studios for rehearsal, recording and live broadcast, along with a triple-height studio for large scale performing arts skills development such as aspiring circus performers, the new campus opened in the summer of 2023.

A recording studio with acoustic panels on the walls. A person is sitting at a desk with audio equipment, speaking into a microphone and wearing headphones. Through the window, another part of the studio is visible, suggesting a setup for professional audio recording.

Being appointed as the building-wide acoustic designers, we advised on sound separation, room acoustics and noise control for the various spaces within the Roundhouse Campus project. Sited on the existing service yard of the Roundhouse building, in a very busy commercial and residential area, the building is designed to a high acoustic specification that will allow both minimum distraction from environmental noise and a negligible noise impact to the neighboring noise-sensitive areas.

A modern open-plan office environment with wooden ceiling and white columns. People are working at communal desks with computers. The area is brightly lit with pendant lights and natural light from the windows. There's a casual seating area in the background with colorful chairs and tables.

Using a mix of sustainable, repurposed, and traditional construction materials, we worked closely with the design team and developed a building planning which includes a very efficient stacking of the various Studio and Community spaces within a confined footprint. Separate constructions, resilient materials and efficient building planning will all work together to allow the concurrent and uninterrupted use of the three main Studio Spaces and the Broadcast & Recording Studio within the new Campus building.

The same gymnasium as the first image, with the focus on a person juggling clubs in the center. They are standing on a textured spherical object on top of a blue gymnastics mat, with various juggling equipment on the floor nearby. To the left, a person is seen riding a unicycle, and another is balancing on a slackline with the assistance of a trainer.
