Harry assists and consults in all aspects of theatre design.

My role at Charcoalblue is a Theatre Consultant Assistant. In this role I work with the Charcoalblue team to assist across all aspects of design, from drafting and 3D modelling, to sightline assessments and research. I like to take a unique approach to every project I work on. With different designers, teams and a unique set of challenges AND solutions, I try to mould my working style to best suit the team. With fast moving timelines and a rapidly evolving design, I like to take care to complete my work with efficiency and reliability, ensuring the information is kept up to date. The most important thing to me is that the design is interpreted and communicated most effectively to best convey the designers’ intent.

What Brought You to Charcoalblue

I came to Charcoalblue in the final year of my university degree as a design intern. Studying set and costume design, I became interested in and critical of the spaces I was working within. Noting the value of ongoing first hand experience working as a set and costume designer alongside Charcoalblue, which I have continued to do for the last 5 years.

A Place That Shaped or Inspires You

The space that comes to mind is the Malthouse in Melbourne. At 16 years old, it was the first non-traditional, found space, I had been to. There was something so cool and honestly audacious about watching this play in an old brewery. It’s just a place you want to spend time in, seeing the original roof trusses and brick walls, that all added to the performance and feel of the space was so inspiring.

Cultural Value That Inspires You to Go the Extra Mile

Creativity and innovation inspire me the most. Charcoablue is at the cutting edge of theatre design and I feel so lucky to amongst total experts in their craft. There is nothing more inspiring than hearing a colleague explain a new idea, and getting to be a part of that is also really special. I like to really take the time to listen and ask questions, and try to take that with me onto future projects.
