Mercury Store
Brooklyn, NY
New York's Home for theatre makers and creators.
The Mercury Store is a start-up lab space for theatre artists – stage directors, choreographers, and devisers – providing lab space for creative endeavours. It offers residencies, studios and co-working spaces, community networks and funding. The Mercury Store’s guiding principles are artistic excellence, wide diversity of artists, creative and intellectual risk-taking and rigor, and equitable working conditions. We are proud to have worked on their new home, a renovated 16,000 square foot warehouse that was once a metal foundry, in Brooklyn, NY.
The new building’s flexible and technically robust spaces allow for inventive response to the diverse creative community of New York City. It includes various rehearsal rooms, coworking spaces and community spaces where they can work and create together. The buildings existing heavy timber classification has been upheld and expanded to include a new CLT floor structure and is one of New York City’s first glue-laminated beam/column and cross-laminated timber flooring systems.
Charcoalblue were involved with the project from 2016, offering technical and acoustic input. The technical scope included consideration for flexible use of the space, the need for quick setups, as well ease of use for future rental clients. Charcoalblue also consulted on the acoustic design and provided room acoustics, background noise, and sound separation advice to meet the client’s wide range of needs. In collaboration with the architect, CO Adaptive Architecture, the design elements came together to provide the Mercury Store a new home where they can create.
