There is no venue of this size and scale that can respond to its users in a way that the Boulevard can. It is a testament to theatrical innovation, holistic design and close collaboration between the designer, architect, client and operators who, at every stage of the process have had great fun together creating this valuable space within Soho.

Charcoalblue were thrilled to work with Fawn James and her team at Soho Estates and the team from SODA Architects to re-imagine The Boulevard Theatre. This wonderful Walker’s Court project involved the redevelopment of one of Soho’s most well-known thoroughfares. Furthermore, it is the first new theatre to be built in the West End for 50 years, and so we were absolutely delighted to provide theatre, technical and acoustic design consultancy.
The brief was to design a state-of-the-art, highly flexible, hard-working venue able to accommodate a rich, mixed programme of music, drama and spectacle.
The theatre design brings kinetic architecture to the fore in an auditorium that revolves to vary the connection to the spaces around it and to the street outside. This extraordinary flexibility offers a range of formats that can be tailored to meet the unique needs of specific productions and users. The combination of a floor-recessed revolve comprising of six stage elevators and a suspended revolving balcony, offering maximum flexibility in this intimate jewel-box of a space.

Alongside the revolving auditorium, dedicated bars service the theatre, whilst a new theatre restaurant offers performance experiences that work in tandem with the performance offerings. All of these spaces are equipped with technical links to enable the building to function either as a series of concurrently usable, stand-alone spaces or as one exceptional single entity.
