Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity

Banff, AB, Canada

Renewal of the Banff Centre’s most important training and performing arts venue.

Founded in 1933, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity is Canada’s largest postgraduate arts school. What started as a single course in drama has grown to become a world-renowned organisation across dozens of disciplines, located in a setting of extraordinary natural beauty within Canada’s first national park.

Building on our master planning study undertaken in 2016 with Toronto’s KPMB Architects, the first project of a multi-phase revitalisation was successfully completed with the renovation of the original theatre built in 1967 – which reopened as the newly named Jenny Belzberg Theatre in recognition of a transformational gift from the Belzberg family, the largest in Banff Centre history.

The Phase One theatre renovation completely transformed the venue’s interior to significantly improve accessibility, sightlines, and audience comfort alongside upgrades to auditorium acoustics and technical systems. Future phases to renovate and expand the Banff Centre will address improvements to artistic creation spaces and expand public space with new opportunities for art and artists to engage with the public and connect outdoors with the surrounding campus.
