Dan Rousseau
Senior Experience Consultant
Dan is responsible for understanding and meeting the needs of Experience clients and designing event spaces accordingly. He serves as the primary contact for events operations teams, AV project managers, and architectural design teams, ensuring a smooth and collaborative project process.
I’m a Senior Design Manager at Charcoalblue, working across some of the most complex and varied projects in the practice – from serving as Lead Design Manager on New Murabba, one of the most ambitious urban development projects in the world, to acting as owner’s representative for a major global tech company, where I work directly with architects and design teams to ensure their event spaces meet the highest standards from concept through first day of business. I also lead theatrical consulting projects where deep technical knowledge and careful client stewardship have to work in lockstep. I came to this work after more than a decade in broadcast lighting design (including two Emmy Awards) and that background shapes how I think about every space I touch: who is inside it, what they feel, and whether the design is actually serving them.
What Clients/Colleagues Value About You
I think it’s the combination of technical fluency and relationship instinct. I can engage seriously with the design and technical details of a project, but I’m equally focused on reading the room — understanding what a client actually needs versus what they’re asking for, and knowing when to push back and when to listen. A big part of my job is making sure clients feel comfortable and at ease, especially on projects that are complex or unfamiliar territory for them. People tend to trust that I’m paying attention, that I’ll flag problems before they become expensive, and that I’ll be straight with them. On projects with a lot of moving parts and a lot of stakeholders, that consistency matters.
What You Hope People Feel in a Space You’ve Worked On
That it was made for them. Not in a literal sense, but that it anticipates them that someone thought carefully about what they’d need, what they might feel, and how the space could quietly serve all of it. The best performance spaces disappear into the experience. Nobody in the audience is thinking about the sightlines or the acoustics; they’re just in it completely. When a project achieves that, you know the consultancy did its job right.
What We Won’t Learn from Your CV
I have a genuine passion for theatre organs and the grand movie palaces of the 1920s and 30s. Those opulent, aspirational spaces were built to make ordinary people feel like royalty for two hours, and I find that history endlessly compelling. I’ve been involved with the New York Theatre Organ Society for years, and what keeps drawing me back is the idea that spaces can carry culture across generations and that some things are worth preserving. It’s not so far from what we do at Charcoalblue, when you think about it.
Cultural Value You Most Identify With
Professional excellence, without question. For me that means showing up fully prepared, being honest about where things stand, and holding a high bar at every stage of a project regardless of its scale or complexity. It also means being someone that clients and colleagues can rely on, not just to deliver, but to do it in a way that makes the process feel manageable. I think excellence is as much about how you work as what you produce. The relationships you build, the clarity you bring to difficult conversations, the care you put into the details that nobody will ever notice: that’s where it actually lives.
