Project Summary
The new Doris Duke Theatre at Jacob’s Pillow restores a vital performance space at one of the world’s most important centres for dance. The original theatre was lost to fire in 2020, prompting the creation of a reimagined venue that honours its legacy while equipping artists with a flexible, technologically advanced environment for 21st-century performance.
The theatre strengthens Jacob’s Pillow’s historic campus in the Berkshires, home to America’s longest-running international dance festival and a National Historic Landmark dedicated to supporting dance artists and audiences from around the world.

Charcoalblue’s Approach
Working with architects Mecanoo and Marvel, Charcoalblue provided theatre and acoustic design consultancy for the new building, helping shape a venue designed specifically for dance creation and presentation. Our goal was to create a theatre that prioritises flexibility, intimacy, and technical capability — ensuring the venue can support the evolving needs of contemporary dance.a
The Vision
Jacob’s Pillow sought to rebuild the Doris Duke Theatre not simply as a replacement for the lost building, but as an evolution of the campus’s mission.
The new venue would:
- maintain the intimacy and warmth of the original theatre
- provide a performance and creation space designed specifically for dance which offers artists flexibility
- support new forms of technology-enabled performance
- expand artistic and community programming to all seasons
- deepen the connection between the theatre, the landscape, and the broader campus

Key Challenges
Rebuilding a Beloved Cultural Venue
The original Doris Duke Theatre had been central to the Jacob’s Pillow campus. The new building needed to preserve its intimate atmosphere while significantly expanding its capabilities.
Designing a Theatre Specifically for Dance
Dance requires different spatial and technical considerations from many other performing arts disciplines, including:

Integrating the Building with Landscape and Heritage
Jacob’s Pillow is a unique campus set within the Berkshires countryside and built on the ancestral homelands of the Mohican people. The new theatre needed to respond sensitively to the natural environment and cultural context.
