Hi, I’m Ryan. At Charcoalblue, I help design and develop our world class acoustic environments—from performance spaces to immersive cultural experiences. I’m drawn to the intersection of engineering and creativity, and I love the challenge of taking ambitious architectural and acoustic ideas and making them work within the constraints of real world construction. Finding elegant, efficient ways to integrate acoustic scope into broader project demands is at the core of my approach, and I’m always exploring how theatrical and AV systems shape our acoustic experience.Beyond project work, I continue to explore ways that computational techniques can enhance our understanding of sound behavior in buildings and support our design work. For me, the most exciting work happens where technical rigor, collaboration, and imagination meet.

What You Hope People Feel in a Space You’ve Worked On

I hope people feel an immediate sense of ease and purpose—as though the space naturally supports whatever they’ve come there to do. For me, the best acoustic design is the kind you don’t consciously notice. Instead, it quietly elevates the performance, the conversation, or the experience unfolding in the room. When someone steps into a space I’ve worked on, I want them to feel that it simply works: that it sounds right, feels right, and allows them to focus fully on the art, the collaboration, or the activity at hand. If the acoustics help the space become the perfect environment for its intended use, then I know the design is successful.

Coffee, Travel, or Creative Ritual

For me, it’s going for a skateboard ride. It’s a completely different pace from almost everything else I do, and that contrast is what makes it so grounding. Skating gives me a chance to reset, focus on the motion, and enjoy a calm, steady rhythm. It’s one of the easiest ways for me to unwind and find some balance outside of work.

Cultural Value You Most Identify With

I identify most with collaboration. Acoustics doesn’t live in isolation—it has to coexist with architecture, theatrical systems, and the practical realities of construction. I enjoy the process of working with designers, consultants, and contractors to shape solutions that fit the whole project rather than forcing one discipline to dominate. Collaboration is where ideas get sharpened, made realistic, and ultimately made better. The moments when different perspectives align toward the same goal are the most rewarding part of the work for me.
