Nigel Alexander
Group Manager + Principal
I am a Business Development Manager focused on growing Charcoalblue’s presence in emerging sectors. I try to approach my work with a balance of curiosity and strategy – always asking questions and learning, while simultaneously looking for opportunities that align with our skills, culture and mission. For me this means learning from both internal colleagues and external partners and clients. I aim to use that foundation to bring a strategic mindset to the development of potential projects to make sure efforts are backed by direction and planning. I am very inspired by the power that physical spaces can have to bring people together and create memorable experiences. What matters most to me is doing my best to help ensure that the ideas and work of creatives, designers, and professionals can be brought to life with integrity and shared with global audiences.
What Does Great Design or Experience Mean to You
For me great experience design is based on bringing to life a story or message in a memorable way that is accessible to a wide variety of demographics. Great experience design should employ any creative, technological, or design tool needed to help explore that story in a way that considers all touchpoints and senses. Doing so can bring people together to make them feel a certain emotion, challenge how they see the world, or simply make them say ‘wow’. To me, having intention, creativity and accessibility as core design principles leads to a greater impact on the audience.
A Place That Shaped or Inspires You
I was born and raised on Vancouver Island off the coast of British Columbia. The natural beauty, pace of life and kindness of people is an endless source of inspiration for me.
What Are You Learning About Right Now
I’m reading a book that chronicles the digital music revolution. It focuses on the invention of the MP3 and the rise of music piracy. It’s a fascinating story that highlights the perspective of inventors and engineers, music obsessed fans, and corporate executives. A very interesting overview of the forces at play in the push that made the art form universally accessible.
A Book, Podcast, Building, or Creative Work That Inspires You
I love the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, specifically the atrium lobby. It’s exemplifies 1970’s architecture – brutalist and futuristic. It’s grandiose and has so many different pockets and spaces that invite exploration. A great example of a space that was designed with full commitment to a vision.
Cultural Value You Most Identify With
Of Charcoalblue’s cultural values, I identify most with Collaboration. I feel that collaboration should be at the core of every thing that is done within a place of work. This includes commercial plans or goals, as well as creative and design endeavors. By incorporating different perspectives and points of view you’re strengthening the end result and bringing to life a more well rounded offering. Working collaboratively also trickles down to other important values like creativity, communication, equity, and professional excellence – by starting from a collaborative basis we’re driving the best results, learning to communicate, and doing all of this in an inclusive way.
