To consult on all elements of theatre design, specializing in the design of stage engineering and other technical systems.

I am a consultant at Charcoalblue who specializes in stage engineering, which encompasses all sorts of moving parts and pieces backstage, under stage, and over the audience including (but not limited to) rigging and stage machinery. I enjoy the challenges that this specialty can present. One of my primary goals in consulting is to help design spaces that are as functional as possible for everyone making the show happen and minimizing as many logistical challenges as possible. I also believe that we should design all our spaces with theater technicians in mind and challenge ourselves to keep improving upon our designed spaces for the people that work within them.

What Does Great Design or Experience Mean to You

Great design to me is functional, inclusive, and human centered. It should include working with closely with stakeholders to really dive into the needs and wishes for different spaces so that we can design not only for the audiences and actors, but also for everyone working in the theater and surrounding building.

What We Won’t Learn from Your CV

I’m a keeper houseplants and very young bonsai trees. I enjoy having greenery in my home and enjoy the challenges that young bonsai bring.

Cultural Value That Guides Engagement with Others

Collaboration drives much of my work, both in working with my teammates at Charcoalblue and with other consultants and stakeholders. All of us being great design insight but none of us can work in vacuum, otherwise the theater won’t get designed and built in a integrated way. The entire team has to work together to make things happen, whether it be coordinating on lighting positions or collaborating on structural steel locations.
