Bruno Cardenas

Bruno Cardenas is an Associate Director in Acoustics at Charcoalblue’s New York studio and an adjunct faculty member at the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University. He specializes in the acoustic design of spaces for performance and assembly, including drama theatres, music performance halls, event spaces, outdoor spaces, and found spaces.

Bruno is an experienced acoustics consultant specializing in acoustic design for the performing arts and skilled in the integration of acoustic design with the allied theatrical, architectural, and technical design needs within performance spaces. Bruno focuses on the acoustic design of Charcoalblue’s North American projects as well as providing project management and integrated team leader services. At the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, Bruno teaches in the Masters Acoustic Program bringing a perspective directly from the performing arts community.

What Excites You Most About Your Work

What excites me most about my work is the moment when design, technology, and human experience all click together. I appreciate the process of taking something complex or abstract — whether it’s an acoustic challenge, a client’s vision, or the unique character of a space — and shaping it into a coordinated design.

What We Won’t Learn from Your CV

My curiosity. It goes beyond technical problem-solving. I’m the kind of person who can’t help but ask what sits behind the brief, behind the design choice, behind the way a space makes you feel before you even realise why. My CV lists the projects I’ve worked on, but it doesn’t show the part of me that’s continually observing, listening, testing, and following threads of thought.

Cultural Value You Most Identify With

The value that inspires me most is Collaboration. So much of our work depends on bringing different perspectives together — designers, engineers, project managers, clients, and users — and I find a lot of energy in that shared process. Collaboration also keeps me accountable — not just to doing my part well, but to making sure the wider team has what they need, that information is clear, and that decisions are shared rather than siloed. For me, going the extra mile often means ensuring the path is smoother for the people around me, so we can all deliver something we’re proud of.
