Yale University Dramatic Arts Building
New Haven, Connecticut
A new building to bring the students, programs, and operations of the Yale School of Drama under one roof for the first time.
Yale University is one of America’s most important institutions of theatrical education. The David Geffen School of Drama offers world-class postgraduate training in Acting, Design, Directing, Dramaturgy, Playwriting, Stage Management, Technical Design and Production and Theatre Management. The Yale Repertory Theatre is an on-campus professional producer. The DGSD training program and the YRT have a complementary relationship between conservatory and professional practice similar to that of a medical school and a teaching hospital.
Currently, students at the DGSD take classes and host performances in 10 buildings on the Yale campus which lack full accessibility, are not fully modernized and present challenges to collaborative work. The creation of the Dramatic Arts Building will consolidate the operations of the School and the Repertory Theatre, while also bringing the undergraduate Theater and Performance Studies program and the Yale Dramatic Association (Dramat) all under one roof.
Charcoalblue began working with Yale in 2017 with early programming studies. Following a selection process, in 2022 we joined the design team with KPMB Architects for the design of the Dramatic Arts Building. A centerpiece of the new facility will be a new home for the Yale Repertory Theatre. In addition, the new building will provide a Studio Theatre, extensive Rehearsal Spaces, Production Workshops, and a wide range of teaching and learning classrooms and laboratories for the many different disciplines and areas of study offered by the School.
