Sydney Theatre Company

Sydney, Australia

Four decades since their establishment, the acclaimed Sydney Theatre Company has begun the most ambitious redevelopment in their history, completely reimagining the audience facilities and theatre-making spaces in their Walsh Bay home.

Established in 1978, the Sydney Theatre Company has become one of the largest domestic producers of staged work in Australia. The company is currently spread over three sites including the Sydney Opera House, where they are the resident theatre company. Now the organisation has launched the Wharf Renewal Project which will see their home on the Wharf renovated and significantly upgraded.

We're working with the Sydney Theatre Company and Hassell Architects on a scheme to refurbish their facilities on Pier 4/5 in Walsh Bay. The project rebuilds the Company’s two Wharf Theatres and reorganises the surrounding rehearsal rooms, workshops, administration, storage and public facilities.

“The Wharf Renewal Project looks forward to the needs of the next generation of theatre-makers and audiences at the same time, respecting 30 years of life and work in Walsh Bay.”

The aim is to ensure a relevant and viable future for the Company and its audiences on the Wharf and as an anchor of the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, a project supported by Infrastructure New South Wales.

The new wharf theatres have been designed to respect the architectural heritage of the historical 1921 pier building as well as to provide the flexibility that supports different theatre formats.

“A unified build of the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct with the Sydney Theatre Company will provide a range of cultural benefits to the people of NSW”

Don Harwin, Minister for the Arts, NSW Government
