RUIN at The Store X
London, UK
A multi-sensory vision of a mythical, abandoned nightclub within one of Europe's most exciting cultural spaces with lighting, sound and video system design and installation by Charcoalblue.
All of the technical systems were designed so that they could be reconfigured and reprogrammed to allow the installation to also function as a flexible events space, or working nightclub.
RUIN by Ben Kelly and Virgil Abloh pieced together fragments of a mythical, abandoned nightclub to create a dialogue on musical history. The installation brought together Ben Kelly, one of the UK’s most respected interior designers, and Virgil Abloh, an American designer, DJ and founder of fashion label Off-White.
In collaboration with the rest of the team, we provided lighting design (by Emma Chapman), sound and video system design, and all installation, programming and sequencing for the fully automated 1hr 40min installation which ran for 8hrs a day, 6 days a week in November 2017.
The installation contained six independent video displays of various sizes, eight zones of audio control and a full lighting rig (including 48 custom built LED “fluorescent” tubes covering the walls of the space), which was all centrally controlled and synchronised with the soundtrack.
All of the technical systems were designed so that they could be reconfigured and reprogrammed to allow the installation to also function as a flexible events space, or working nightclub.
Watch RUIN come to life.
