BNZ Theatre

17/03/26

Hamilton (Kirikiriroa), Aotearoa New Zealand

Overlooking the Waikato River, the BNZ Theatre restores a major performing arts venue to Hamilton following the closure of the city’s Founders Theatre in 2016. Developed over nearly a decade, the project re-establishes a civic stage for the region while reconnecting the city centre with its riverfront.

The theatre forms the heart of a wider cultural development that combines heritage restoration, new public gathering spaces and a highly adaptable performance venue designed to host an exceptional range of productions.

Working alongside Jasmax, Charcoalblue led theatre planning, technical design and acoustics to create a venue capable of supporting international touring productions alongside national companies and local community performance.

A New Stage for the Waikato

When Hamilton’s Founders Theatre closed due to structural issues, the Waikato region lost its primary venue for live performance. The BNZ Theatre was conceived not simply as a replacement, but as an opportunity to create a new kind of performance space for the city.

The venue needed to support touring musicals, orchestral concerts, ballet, drama and contemporary music — while also serving schools, youth theatre and community performance groups.

Achieving this within a single auditorium required a carefully balanced approach to flexibility, acoustics and technical infrastructure.

Designing a Flexible Performance Space

At the centre of the building is a 1,300-seat auditorium designed to operate across multiple performance modes.

The space functions as:

• a lyric theatre for drama, dance and musicals
• a symphonic concert hall for orchestral performance
• a contemporary concert venue for amplified music

Removable seating in the stalls allows the auditorium to convert into a flat-floor standing configuration for concerts and large events, significantly expanding programming potential while maintaining strong sightlines and audience comfort for seated performances.

This adaptability ensures the venue can support everything from international touring productions to regional community events within the same space.

Our ambition was to create a truly world-class venue – an auditorium and stage designed for excellent comfort, unimpeded sightlines, and a global standard of technology equivalent to Broadway and London's West End. Through deep consultation with Waikato's artistic community and national stakeholders, we've delivered a theatre and acoustic design that offers intimacy for spoken performances and the capability for high-energy concerts.

Acoustic and Technical Strategy

Creating a room that works equally well for spoken theatre and orchestral music required a carefully developed acoustic approach.

Charcoalblue designed a variable acoustic strategy centred on a demountable suspended orchestra shell. The shell provides acoustic enclosure for large ensembles while enhancing sound reflections throughout the auditorium, supporting clarity and balance for both performers and audiences.

The stage and production systems were designed to international touring standards, with generous stage dimensions, flexible rigging infrastructure and integrated lighting and audiovisual systems capable of supporting large-scale productions.

Together, these systems allow the theatre to accommodate symphonic concerts, touring musicals, ballet, drama and contemporary live music.

Impact

The BNZ Theatre represents a significant step forward for performing arts infrastructure in the Waikato.

The project restores Hamilton’s primary performance venue while providing international-standard facilities capable of supporting major touring productions, national arts organisations and local creative communities alike.

As part of a wider riverside cultural precinct, the theatre also contributes to the revitalisation of Hamilton’s city centre and strengthens the connection between the city and the Waikato River.

“The BNZ Theatre represents a significant leap forward for live performance in the Waikato and for contemporary venue design in Aotearoa New Zealand. Rather than turning inward, the building opens itself to the city and the river, connecting audiences to the natural environment, the artists on stage, and the layered cultural heritage of Kirikiriroa Hamilton.”
