Bringing Charcoalblue into our design team was one of the best decisions we have made. They have proved to be extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic, efficient and supportive; working with them, and with Jon Stevens in particular, has been a pleasure. Their hands-on, collaborative approach and detailed investigation of our requirements has resulted in a practical yet innovative scheme which completely suits our needs.

Project summary

The Snape Maltings Rehearsal Campus project is a development of existing industrial buildings located just outside the village of Snape in Suffolk. The project comprises the substantial refurbishment of four derelict buildings on the site. A new building is to house a purpose-built rehearsal studio - Studio 1 - which forms the heart of the project.

Studio 1’s primary purpose is to provide a rehearsal space for performances in the existing Concert Hall adjacent to the development. In addition, the studio will be used for performances of chamber music, recitals, dance, lectures and small-scale opera. To this end, Charcoalblue has designed a motorised bleacher seating system, a full stagelighting and audiovisual wiring infrastructure, a semi-sprung floor, a mixture of motorised and hand-winched bars for scenery and lighting, and a permanent control room at one end of the gallery.

Charcoalblue provided design and planning assistance on all aspects of the new performance areas, as well as designing technical systems throughout the complex in close collaboration with the Snape Maltings technical staff.
