RSC New York Transfers
Charcoalblue worked closely with the RSC’s technical teams to explore options for a new bespoke venue in New York capable of restaging works from the large-scale thrust stages in the UK.
In 2007 the RSC and Charcoalblue investigated squeezing a thrust stage in NY’s Beacon Theatre before its refurbishment programme. Working together, an exciting scheme emerged to build a tiered structure inside the old shell; however the project was not executed.
Following the success of the new theatre in Stratford -upon-Avon, the RSC developed Charcoalblue's auditorium designs to deliver an 800-seat 'flat pack' travelling performance space. This three-tiered structure was built inside New York's historic Park Avenue Armoury for a 6-week RSC season in the summer of 2011. This latest exciting development follows on from the hugely successful Charcoalblue and RSC collaborations on the 1,000-seat Courtyard Theatre and the 700-seat Roundyard at Camden Roundhouse.
