Transforming the state theater of Maryland

Center Stage, Baltimore

Project summary

Charcoalblue is providing theater and acoustic consultancy for the renovation and expansion of the 19th Century former Jesuit School which is Center Stage’s home.

Working with Center Stage’s artistic director Kwame Kwei- Armah and architects Cho Benn Holback Associates, Charcoalblue is renewing and reworking one of the two existing theater spaces - the Head Theater - radically redesigning it to create a 400 seat thrust stage auditorium with greatly improved technical systems and a modular stage floor to enable format flexibility.

We are also designing a completely new experimental, education led performance studio for 99 seats - the Third Space - providing the company with an opportunity to program smaller scale works in a flexible studio space, as well as reinvigorating the public spaces by incorporating cutting-edge video technology.
